Pricking out and Transplanting

For raising larger plants fit for planting, the plants have to be transplanted in nursery beds, poly bags or other containers. This hardens the plants and gives a fibrous lateral root system, so that sturdier plants are available for planting. It is a delicate operation and needs much attention. It is done when cotyledons airdropped off or at least two leaves are formed and the seedling stem is strong enough to withstand transplanting. This takes about 3 to 4 weeks after germination. It should be done preferably in the morning or evening hours.

For pricking out, the seedlings should be held with thumb and the forefinger just below the first pair of leaves and pulled up gently after loosening the soil with a sharpened stick or dibble if growing medium is sand. It should also be ensured that root is not coiled. If growing medium is sandy loam soil, the beds should be sprinkled with water and seedling line should be loosened by inserting a spatula below the root layer.

Transplanting should be done in a hole longer than the tap root length made by inserting wooden stick smaller in diameter. After putting the seedlings without coiling the tap root, the hole should be filled up with soil and pressed gently. Adequate watering is also essential to avoid drying up of seedlings. The transplanting bed should be provided with shade for about a week.

If the seedlings are to be maintained for about 6 to 8 months, the distance between transplants should be about 5×5 cm to 8×8 cm. If the seedlings are to be maintained for more than 8 months, the distance between transplants should be increased accordingly to provide space for their growth. Transplanting is a common nursery practice with Casuarina equisetifolia, Eucalyptus Sp Dalbergia sissoo, Cedrus deodara, Cupressus, fir, spruce etc.

Transplanting beds are manured, irrigated and weeded in the same way as that of the seed beds. The work of transplanting requires skill and care and if not done properly, results in heavy mortality.
