- What is the oyster plant used for? – The Oyster Plant (Tradescantia Spathacea) is a fleshy or succulent perennial garden herb ornamental plant and is found in many tropical countries. Medicinally, the plant is used for colds, sore throat, whooping cough, nasal bleeding, and is also used as an anti- inflammatory.
- What are the characteristics of oyster plants? – Oyster plant is a short-stemmed, tender foliage plant that makes attractive, small, dense, spreading clumps. It forms a solid groundcover of upright leaves. The 6 to 8 inch long, sword-shaped leaves are green above and purplish below.
- What is another name for the oyster plant? – Tradescantia spathacea (synonyms Tradescantia discolor, Rhoeo spathacea, Rhoeo discolor); (also called Oyster Herb, Daun Kepah, Nanas Kerang, Boatlily (CĆ¢y Lįŗ» Bįŗ”n, Lįŗ£o Bįŗ”n, SĆ² Huyįŗæt), Moses in a basket, Cradle Lily, Moses in His Cradle, Moses on a Raft, Moses in the Bulrushes, Men in a Boat, Moses-in-Cradle, (Chinese)
- Do oyster plants like sun or shade? – Oyster plants thrive best in partial sunlight, ideally getting about 3-6 hours of sunlight daily. While these plants can tolerate full sun and full shade, optimal growth occurs with balanced lighting conditions. Using artificial grow lights can be a useful supplement, especially during winter months.
- How to Water Oyster plant? – Originating from the undergrowth of tropical forests, oyster plant thrives in environments with high humidity and consistent moisture. This species exhibits a preference for evenly moist soil conditions without being waterlogged. Watering every week is ideal to mimic its natural habitat’s hydration cycle. Indoors, oyster plant is favored for its resilience and adaptability to household humidity levels, making it a popular choice for interior greenery. To optimize growth and maintain vibrant foliage, ensuring adequate drainage in containers is crucial as it prevents root rot ā a common issue when water lingers around this plant’s roots.
- What Are the Sunlight Requirements for Oyster plant? – Oyster plant thrives in partial sun conditions, where it receives less intense, indirect light for several hours a day. The plant can adapt to both full sun and full shade, although these extremes can influence growth and health; full sun may cause leaf scorch while full shade can lead to leggy stems and reduced vibrancy in leaf coloration. Featuring leaves that can alter their angle in response to light, oyster plant maintains a compact form in brighter conditions. For outdoor planting, locations that offer dappled sunlight such as under trees or beside east-facing walls are ideal.
- What Is the Ideal Temperature Range for Oyster plant? – Oyster plant is resilient to a range of temperatures but showcases notable sensitivity to extremes. It can tolerate cold down to 0ā (32ā) and heat up to 43ā (109ā). Its ability to endure these conditions implies that in colder climates, the plant may need protective measures like indoor relocation or frost cloths. In high heat, ensure adequate hydration and partial shade to prevent wilting. Symptoms of temperature stress include discoloration, leaf drop, and stunted growth. Address overcooling by moving oyster plant to a warmer location and overheating by increasing watering and providing shade.
- HOW ARE PLANTS SHIPPED? Plants are shipped in sturdy packaging to ensure safety of the plant and prevent spillage of manure and coco peat. The shipping box has an air hole for ventilation and plants are adequately watered to stay alive and green for up to 7 days.
- HOW TO TAKE CARE OF PLANTS? Water once a week in summer and once in a month in winter. Keep in moderate to bright indirect sunlight. Avoid temperature shock by shifting plants between indoors and outdoors for better growth. Perfect low maintenance plant that can purify air in your home, office.
- IS TAP WATER GOOD FOR PLANTS? Don’t use chlorine water (tap water) as it kills the root. If the coco peat is becoming light brown or dry, it should be sprayed with drinking water.

I had such great expectations from Ugaoo but the plant that I received is very small and the quality is also pretty bad, most of the leaves have yellowed and also the container was damaged. Don’t waste your money in online plant shopping, go to a nearby nursery.

The major dilemma while ordering plants from an online source is whether the plant will be delivered intact or not. I am relived that what I ordered that is exactly what I got. The plant is in healthy shape. I am happy.

The plant just has two shoots and its leaves are yellow and appears to be in transit for a long time . Donāt know whether it will survive or not. Feel sorry for the little plant. In future I will prefer local nursery.
